There are a lot of myths around hair loss and so many theories also around it as to why it happens and whom it should happen. But there are only few things that are quite true about hair loss and it is time that you find out what is true and what isn’t.
In this blog, we have listed down few most common myths surrounding hair loss and also have tried to explain why it is not true.
You only become bald when you’re old
When it comes to male pattern baldness, it is expected to affect at least 50% of men who are over the age of 50. But Hair Loss begins differently for everyone and just because one is going bald, does not mean that they are old. Hence this myth is quite false. In some men, balding can start early in the age, as young as 25, but most of the male pattern balding begins between the ages of 30 to 35. Balding usually starts with a receding hairline and after that one starts losing hair near the crown and eventually start losing it on the back and sides of the head.
In women, balding is found very common after menopause, but it can also start as early during puberty. After 60 years of age, 80% of women have some degree of hair loss, and most commonly it happens at the crown. Many women tend to lose hair during pregnancy and after child birth.
Frequent washing and shampooing can cause the hair to fall out
This is quite false. Some believe that if the hair is washed regularly, it can lead to hair loss. But, regular washing and shampooing do not have any effect on hair loss or baldness. This is totally false and is a myth that people tend to believe in. And if you are wondering about all that hair that you lose after washing your hair, those are basically the hair that is dead and have been removed after the hair wash or shampoo. Hairs that get removed after shampooing of hair is often in the resting phase. The hairs would always fall out if as they are ready to leave the hair follicle and those hair that fall out are those that are affected from stress, poor diet or any other causes. But it is important to wash and shampoo your hair regularly as it can keep dirt away, but then you should not wash it too often as it may strip away the natural oils, making the hair more dry and brittle, which may fall out.
Hair loss is always inherited from the father’s, or mother’s side of the family
In the majority of cases, hair loss is a hereditary condition, where the gene can be carried out by both the sides of the family. As per research, men who have fathers with bald pate can have a higher chance of developing male pattern baldness as compared to those who don’t. But then, hair loss is a very complex trait that could be traced from both the sides of the family. It can also be due to other factors such as result of poor diet, certain medications, age, stress and also hormone levels.
Wearing tight hairstyles can cause hair loss
This is quite true. If you are into wearing tight braids or ponytails, it can cause the hair condition called Traction alopecia. This is caused by the excessive amount of tension due to the tight hairstyles on the hair shafts, thus damaging the hair follicle. Over a long period of time, Traction Alopecia, will cause the production of hair to slow down and finally hair stops growing together. But early treatment for Traction Alopecia, is important if natural regrowth is to happen.
Stress causes hair loss
This is absolutely true. Stress, both physical and mental can cause hair loss. Telogen effluvium and diffuse thinning are the two major forms of hair loss that is directly caused by severe stress. In these conditions there can be overall thinning of hair on the scalp, when the hair follicles stop growing prematurely and enter into the resting stage.
Hair restoration does not look natural.
This is quite false. Today, the market is flooded with newer, less invasive surgeries that include Follicular unit Extraction (FUE). In this particular procedure, the scars are very minimal in the donor area and are not visible to the naked eye, which makes the hair transplanted looks very natural.
