If you think your hairline is receding or thinning at the temples and are worried that you will also end up with the same bald pate like that of your father or elder brother, then you need to know about DHT.
In this blog, we will find out what is DHT and how it causes hair loss and what treatments are available for it.
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a male steroid hormone, which hugely contributes to development of male characteristics. DHT is considered very essential as it is a byproduct of testosterone through the 5a-reductase enzyme, helpful in converting a certain percentage of testosterone into DHT in tissues like the liver, skin and hair follicles.
DHT and hair loss are interrelated and is one of the main causes of androgenetic alopecia. This hair loss condition is typically genetic, inherited from your parents and have genetic sensitivity to DHT. The levels of DHT restrict the ability of hair follicles to produce hair growth. It prevents the hair follicles in getting adequate supply of vitamins, proteins and minerals that are required for healthy growth of hair. That is when the hair follicle shrinks, with the shortening of the hair growth stage, and extending the resting stage. As each cycle of hair growth becomes thinner, hair stops growing completely. Men who suffer from androgenetic alopecia will find their hair getting thinner and also will have bald patches around their crown and hairline with the hair follicles stop producing hair.
At present, there is no cure for hair loss but there are a range of medications that are available to help cure hair loss. And there are also hair restoration treatments that help to provide you the appearance of full head of hair. But for men who would like to have a permanent solution for their male pattern baldness, Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) hair transplant surgeries are the perfect solutions.
Follicular Unit Excision Hair Transplant (FUE):FUE Hair Transplant is an advanced hair transplantation technique. It provides and guarantees natural results with fewer scars and also has a less recovery period. In this procedure, the grafts are removed one by one from the sides and back of the scalp by using a small and round cutting instrument. The area is left to heal and later covered with existing hair. Then the bald area is prepared, cleaned and numbed where holes are created with a needle. In the end, each graft is delicately placed in the holes. FUE has the advantage of being minimally less invasive.
Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT): In the FUT procedure, a small strip of tissue is removed from the back of the head, from which the donor hair follicles are to be extracted. Hair follicles are harvested from the strip before they are individually transplanted the recipient areas. In most of the cases, and when it comes to advanced hair loss, FUT is the preferred method as it allows the technician or physician to fully utilise the scalp area to deliver results that are within the patient expectations. In FUT, there can be greatest number of grafts that can be transplanted in a single session.
At the Rootzhair clinic we provide both FUT and FUE hair transplants and strongly believe that only after assessing the patient’s individual needs, we can advise the best method as per the individual case.
For larger hair transplants, we advise for FUT transplant as it is generally superior and FUE technique is advised for those who would like to have smaller transplant. FUE is also preferred for transplantation of scars and eyebrows.
